Contest Rules

Limit of one (1) citizen profile per person, which can only be associated with one e-mail address. As such, the above e-mail address must be validated by said person. Any one person cannot be more than one citizen and candidate. Any person attempting to defraud the contest, in any way whatsoever, shall be disqualified.

The "Become an Ambassador of Hoöstelland" contest is organized by Hostelling International Canada, St-Lawrence Region, for clients residing within the territory it covers. You must be a resident of Quebec or Ontario in order to participate.

There is an Anglophone option and a Francophone option. Participants may register in the option of their choice. If you are fluently bilingual, you can register in both, however the same person cannot win both sections.

Hoöstelland is a fictional country that was created for the purpose of this contest. William Barnaby is a fictional character that was created for the same reason.

Hostelling International Canada employees and their immediate family, along with the members of the jury and their immediate family, may not take part in this contest.

To participate :

  1. Go to www.hoostelland.com website.
  2. Once you’ve registered on the www.hoostelland.com, website ("Become a Citizen of Hoöstelland"), go to the "Become an Ambassador" page, fill out the form and upload a video capsule in English (in the English section) or in French (in the French section). It must not exceed two minutes and must contain a story about a trip you’ve been on. You may also write your story.

You have until 10:00 a.m. November 2, 2009 to submit your story.

If you wish to participate, you must confirm that you hold the rights for the video or the text that you have uploaded.

Furthermore, your participation grants Hostelling International Canada the right to distribute your video or publish your text and photo on the www.hoostelland.com website and on the following sites: Youtube, Facebook, www.hihostels.ca, along with every Hostelling International web site. Hostelling International Canada reserves the right to withdraw videos it deems inappropriate.

Those who register on the www.hoostelland.com website ("the citizens of Hoöstelland") will have until 10:00 a.m. November 2, 2009 to vote for their favourite contestant on the www.hoostelland.com website. Those who are registered can vote by giving out as many "hoösts" as they wish until they’ve all been spent. Registrants receive 100 hoösts per day as soon as they register (members of Hostelling International Canada who register at www.hoostelland.com receive 300 hoösts per day). The 10 Anglophone contestants and the 10 Francophone contestants who have received the most votes as of 10:00 a.m. November 2, 2009 will become the contest finalists.

 

Winning the Main Prize :

A jury made up of people who have been chosen by Hostelling International Canada ("the council of Hoöstellandish ministers") will choose a winner among the finalists in the Anglophone section, as well as a winner in the Francophone section. These two winners will be the Hoöstelland ambassadors for 2009.

The jury’s choice will be based on the story’s originality, the contestant’s personality and storytelling ability, as well as the quality of his or her communication skills.

In order to claim their prize, the winners will have to make video capsules and post on a blog on a regular basis before, during and a few weeks following the trip they won. These capsules and texts will be published on the www.hoostelland.com website’s blog. Furthermore, they will have to be available for three consecutive weeks of travelling between December 1, 2009 and January 31, 2010.

The names of both winners will be announced Friday November 13, 2009 at the offices of Hostelling International Canada –Saint-Laurent Region, located at 3514, rue Lacombe, Montréal (Québec), H3T 1M1, and will be published on the www.hoostelland.com website the same day at 5:00 pm. The winners will also be contacted by e-mail.

Prizes :

A disagreement regarding the organization of a promotional contest or the way in which it is held can be submitted to the Liquor and Gaming Board in order to be resolved. A disagreement regarding the way in which a prize is awarded can be submitted to the Board for the sole purpose of attempting to have it resolved.
